The 20th annual Skywarn® Recognition Day (SRD) is just around the corner! Please don't miss this chance to visit the National Weather Service Office in Melbourne and see their facility in action.

The operating venue is a quiet, clean, air-conditioned, space with plenty of fellow Hams around for tutoring/logging.  This will be an especially welcome environment if you operated at the Stuart Air Show!  Operators will begin making contacts on Friday at 1900 EST and end on Saturday at 1900 EST, 24 hours later.

During the event the NWS will be holding a special Skywarn® Open House on Saturday, December 1st from 10 AM to 4 PM for Hams and Skywarn® operators as well as their family and friends to see our SRD operations.  If you plan on attending the Open House, please RSVP by sending an email to Derrick Weitlich, W1DKW, derrick.weitlich@noaa.gov with the following information:

  • Name/Call Sign
  • Number in your party
  • What time you plan on arriving

Radio operators are highly needed throughout the duration of the event, even during the overnight hours, to exchange brief weather information with contacts.  Whether you can only volunteer for an hour or even several, your help is needed.  If you would like to help out with operating, please send an email to derrick.weitlich@noaa.gov with the following information:

  • Name/Call Sign
  • Hours you can operate
  • Mode you would like to operate (HF, 2M, or Echolink)

As always, food will be provided by the NWS office for radio operators Friday evening and also again during lunch time Saturday.  Additional help with general setup before the event and tear down after the event is also greatly needed.  Check back here frequently for any updates!

If you are unable to attend the SRD event in Melbourne, please join in the fun on the air, from home!

SKYWARN Recognition Day was developed in 1999 by the National Weather Service and the American Radio Relay League. It celebrates the contributions that volunteer SKYWARN radio operators make to the National Weather Service. During the day SKYWARN operators visit NWS offices and contact other radio operators across the world.

SKYWARN Recognition Day Operating Instructions

The objective is for all amateur stations to exchange QSO information with as many National Weather Service Stations as possible on the HF bands, 6 meter, 2 meter and 70 cm bands. Contacts via repeaters are permitted. SKYWARN Recognition Day serves to celebrate the contributions to public safety made by Amateur Radio operators during threatening weather.
